Quadrigatus

Roman Currency

Produced in the 3rd century BCE, the quadrigatus was a silver coin struck at around 93% purity. These early Roman Republic coins closely resembled Greek coins of the time like the didrachm. The quadrigatus gets its name from the back having a depiction of Victory (Roman goddess Victoria) driving a quadriga (four-horse chariot).

The quadrigatus was minted for a number of years until the introduction of the denarius.
