The denarius was first introduced during the Second Punic War in 211 BCE. The denarius was a silver coin meant to help trade with the Greeks. From the introduction of the denarius, it underwent several debacements through the Republic and into the Empire reducing its silver content from close to 100% silver to less than 5% silver in 300 AD.
