Aes Grave

Roman Bronze Currencies

During the Republic of Rome the aes grave coin began being minted after territorial expansion provided an increase in bronze metal. The aes grave is many different weights of bronze coins that were initially minted at these values:

As - I
Semis - S
Triens - 4 Dots
Quadrans - 3 Dots
Sextans - 2 Dots
Uncia - 1 Unit

The Uncia was 1/12 of the value of 1 As, and the base unit that all of the aes grave coins were valued in. The Triens for example had 4 Dots regularly on the coin meaning it was worth 4 Uncia. This would also make the Triens worth 1/3 of an As.
